Dear Parents and Students,

We would like to welcome you all back to another safe school year here in the West Babylon School District. There are a few things we would like to reinforce to our parents and students to ensure the safety of all who ride our buses.  Students’ bus route and bus stop information can be found on the Parent Portal. Please pay attention to the bus number as you may have several buses that travel your route. Please arrive 10 to 15 minutes prior to your pick up time, as well as being at your child’s bus stop in the afternoon prior to the bus arriving. For kindergarten and first graders, a parent or guardian must come to the bus for your child.

If your child requires before or after school childcare, please complete the district childcare form, which can be found on the West Babylon District web site or from the West Babylon Transportation Dept. This completed form must be submitted to the West Babylon Transportation Dept. by April 1st for the following year.

Every effort is made to ensure the safety of our students on the bus and at the bus stop.  There are situations that require your assistance and participation in order to ensure the safety of your children when walking to and from their assigned bus stops. Sometimes, children can be exposed to a dangerous situation because of their own or other’s behavior. For example, your child will not be safe if they are playing in the street while waiting for the bus to arrive. Please supervise your children at the bus stop at all times. This also means younger children that may be there waiting for their siblings.

When walking to the bus stop, please remind your child(ren) to follow a few basic rules that will help keep them safe:

  • Always cross at the corners whenever possible
  • Look both ways before crossing the street, “look left, right and left again” then look at the driver for the Universal Crossing Sign.
  • Stay on the sidewalk if available
  • Be at the bus stop 10 to 15 minutes before scheduled pick up time
  • Under NO circumstances should anyone run after or chase the bus

Here are a few tips for parents/guardian at the bus stop:

  • Please do not drive your child to a different stop or drive after the bus if you have missed the bus
  • If you miss the bus, parents should drive their child(ren) to school
  • Keep your personal vehicle a safe distance away from the assigned stop, 20 feet as prescribed by law
  • Always cross in front of the bus AFTER the driver gives the signal
  • When your child gets off the bus, move away from the bus
  • Stay out of the “DANGER ZONE”

When you board the bus:

  • Use the hand rail when climbing the stairs
  • Seat belts are available on all buses.  We suggest students use them at all times
  • Remain seated at all times until the bus comes to a stop

When you exit the bus:

  • Remember to look to your left and right to make sure it is clear to step off the bus
  • Always look at your school bus driver to get an all clear sign before crossing in front of the bus
  • Please make sure your coat strings and book bags do not get caught in the door or handrail

*** Reminder there is no food or drink allowed on the bus at any time due to the food allergies of some of our students.

Our drivers are prepared to serve our district’s transportation needs. It is also important that we include the parents and guardians as part of our safety program.  We strive to provide the best service to our community. With your help this can be achieved.

Have a wonderful and safe school year!
