Overview
The West Babylon School District implemented Board Policy 5695, Student Internet Enabled Devices, to create a distraction-free learning environment aligned with New York State's phone-free schools requirements. The policy prohibits the use of internet-enabled personal devices during the school day and establishes procedures for device storage, communication with families, and approved exceptions. This report is submitted pursuant to New York State's Distraction-Free Schools requirements and Board Policy 5695 regarding Student Use of Personal Electronic Devices.
Implementation Summary
- Building-level procedures were established at Santapogue, Tooker, JFK, South Bay, Junior High School, and Senior High School.
- Students and families received information regarding the law, internet based device expectations, and consequences in the summer of 2025.
- Staff received information on policy implementation and enforcement.
- Cell Phone deans were appointed to assist with implementation.
- Parents retained the ability to contact students through school offices during the school day.
- Cell phones were temporarily confiscated with the first device violation. Parent communication took place with violations.
