Comprehensive Attendance Policy

The Board of Education recognizes that regular school attendance is a major component of academic success. Through implementation of this policy, the Board expects to reduce the current level of unexcused absences, encourage full attendance by all students, and develop effective intervention strategies to improve attendance.

Daily Tracking & Reporting

  • Period-by-period attendance will be taken at all schools each day.

  • Early departures and late arrivals will be recorded.

  • Absences will be recorded as either excused or unexcused.

  • Parents are responsible for notifying the school on the morning of an absence or tardiness.

  • Parents must provide a written excuse upon the student's return to school.

  • Extended periods of illness will require medical documentation.

Absence Categories & Make-Up Work

  • Excused Absences: Defined as absences due to personal illness, illness or death in the family, impassable roads or weather, religious observance, quarantine, required court appearances, attendance at health clinics, approved college visits, approved cooperative work programs, school-sponsored events, or other reasons as may be approved.

    • Students with excused absences will be given the opportunity to make up a test and/or turn in a late assignment.

  • Unexcused Absences: All other absences are considered unexcused.

    • Unexcused absences will result in parent notification and disciplinary consequences.

    • Students with unexcused absences are expected to consult with the teacher regarding missed work, but will not be given credit for missed assignments.

Credit & Promotion Thresholds

  • Course Credit Denial (Grades 7–12): Junior High School and High School students with more than eight (8) unexcused absences in a half-year course or 15 unexcused absences in a full-year course will be denied credit for that course.

  • Summer School Privilege Loss (Grades 7–12): Junior High School and High School students exceeding nine (9) unexcused absences in a half-year course or 18 unexcused absences in a full-year course will lose the privilege of attending summer school for that course.

  • 30-Day Absence Review (Grades 7–12): Junior High School and High School students exceeding 30 days of absence (in any combination of excused or unexcused absences) in a course must be reviewed by the school's principal to determine if course credit is appropriate.

  • 30-Day Absence Review (Elementary): Elementary students exceeding 30 days of absence (in any combination of excused or unexcused absences) must be reviewed by the school's principal to determine if promotion is appropriate.

Exemplary attendance will be recognized.
