Eligibility Policy

Philosophy

 

The primary objective of our school is to seek the best education possible for our students. To accomplish this task, students must be able to establish academic priorities. It is hoped that this policy will assist our students to achieve this objective. The policy seeks to be proactive and not punitive. We recognize the need for an appeals process to identify unique circumstances. In addition, the committee recognizes the need to constantly evaluate both the criteria and the process and to institute any necessary changes.

Academic Eligibility

  1. For purposes of this policy, the school year is divided into eight academic periods. These periods will coincide with the time periods from progress reports to report card and from report card to the next progress report.
  2. For purposes of this policy, a student can be academically eligible, academically ineligible, or on probation.
  3. A student will be considered academically eligible when the student does not fail two or more subjects for a report card or does not receive two or more "presently failing" comments on a progress report.
  4. A student who receives two failing grades on a report card or two "presently failing" comments on a progress report will be placed on probation for the next five week academic period. During this time, the student must attend extra help classes in the failing classes. This process is to be monitored by the coach or advisor. At the end of the probationary period, the student will be re-evaluated. At this time, the student must not be failing two or more subjects on a report card or received two or more in "presently failing" comments on a progress report. If he/she is not failing two or more subjects, he/she is removed from the probationary list. If he/she is failing two or more subjects, he/she becomes ineligible to participate in co-curricular activities for the next five-week report period. At that time, his/her academic progress will again be evaluated using the same aforementioned criteria. Students who fail the last academic semester in June will be placed on probation for the first academic period in September. They may remove themselves from this probation by successfully completing academic requirements in summer school.

Attendance and Lateness

  1. All coaches and advisors are to enforce the policy that a student must be in school by the conclusion of period four to be eligible to participate in activities that day.
  2. The attendance office will monitor student attendance and lateness. On the first referral from the attendance office, a student will be warned and assigned administrative detention. On each subsequent referral, a student will be assigned in-school suspension, initiating the discipline policy for suspension.

Appeals Process

  1. An Appeals Committee is established to determine special circumstances and to hear all student appeals. This committee will be chaired by Mr. Robert Panariello, Interim Athletic Director, and will contain a guidance counselor, and two faculty members. The committee will meet within one week of the end of an academic period. The decision of this committee will be binding.
