Summer STEAM Fair Sparks Learning

Two students working on a STEAM project thumbnail223905

Students in the elementary summer program showed off their ingenuity and critical thinking skills during a STEAM fair held during their classes at the Junior High School on Aug. 16.

Two classes joined together to host the fun and engaging event to close out summer school and apply the knowledge they acquired during the last several weeks. During 15-minute intervals, students rotated through different STEAM-based activities, led by elementary student leaders. Students created four different towers in four different stations – a straw tower (strong enough to hold an apple) using just straws and tape; an index card tower; a marshmallow tower using toothpicks and marshmallows; and the tallest tower possible using clothespins, popsicle sticks and binder clips.

Students also created catapults using popsicle sticks, rubber bands and spoons. They tested their aluminum foil boats by adding pennies to see how much weight they could hold before sinking. They also made suspension bridges and tested their strength to see how much weight they could hold.
