Third graders at South Bay Elementary School became paleontologists for the day when they participated in a hands-on fossil digging lesson on May 15. As part of their “lessons from the past” science unit, students have been learning about the four different types of fossils. To get ready for their big dig, students created cast molds out of salt dough and made impressions and animal prints using small dinosaur figures. To recreate amber fossils, the third graders used Jell-O and gummy sharks to observe the fossils. Students recorded their observations and findings in their science journals.
