Cell Phone & Smartwatch Policy Letter
Santapogue Elementary School Cell Phone & Smartwatch Policy Letter
August 2026
Dear Santapogue Families,
I hope you're having a fun summer and spending time with your family and friends!
Last fall, there was a new rule implemented in all schools across New York State. The rule says that students cannot use cell phones, smartwatches, or other internet devices during the school day—not even at lunch, recess, or when walking in the hallway. This rule is part of a new law called Education Law 2803.
We know that this might be a big change for some of you, but the goal is to help everyone stay focused, learn better, and spend more time talking and playing with friends in person!
Here's what will happen in our schools:
- Calling Home: If you need to call a parent or guardian during the day, a teacher or the main office will help you.
- Parent Contact: If your parent needs to get in touch with you, they can call the school office.
- Storage Requirement: If you bring a phone or smartwatch to school, it must stay off and inside your backpack.
- Policy Violations: If you take out your device (or have watch on) during the day, it will be sent to the office until the end of the day and your parent or guardian might have to pick it up.
- School Devices: Don't worry! You will still use your school Chromebook for learning in class.
Our teachers, principals, and other grown-ups in school will help you follow this new rule and answer any questions you have.
We're proud of you and excited for another great year of learning and growing together!
Enjoy the rest of your summer—we can't wait to see you in September!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Carere
Principal
