Seventh graders at West Babylon Junior High School have been learning about the New York State Iroquois of the Eastern Woodlands as part of their social studies lessons. They learned how medicine men in the tribe used masks to ward off evil spirits/cure ailments. The masks were made of materials from nature and the environment. Each student created their own mask and an ailment they were trying to cure. To help connect to current events, the students researched some of the most common problems in today’s society – including diseases, hunger and war – and how they would use their mask to cure them.
