Students in kindergarten through fourth grade participating in the West Babylon School District’s summer program combined art and literacy during a creative library lesson inspired by the work of renowned French artist Henri Matisse.

During library time with Ms. Ingrid, students learned about Matisse’s life and artistic style, discovering how the celebrated artist used bold colors and cut-paper shapes to create vibrant works of art. After exploring examples of his famous collages, students put their creativity to work by designing their own Matisse-inspired collage masterpieces.

The hands-on activity encouraged students to express themselves artistically while reinforcing concepts introduced during the lesson. As they selected colors, arranged shapes, and crafted their unique creations, students gained an appreciation for one of history’s most influential artists and the power of creativity.

The lesson is one of many enriching experiences offered through the district's summer program, where students continue to strengthen their literacy skills while exploring art, culture and self-expression in engaging and meaningful ways.
