Soaring Toward the Future: West Babylon Celebrates the Class of 2026

With family, friends, faculty and staff gathered in celebration, West Babylon Senior High School proudly honored the Class of 2026 during commencement exercises on June 26, marking the culmination of years of hard work and growth.
Congratulatory remarks came from across the school community, with the Superintendent of Schools Dr. Yiendhy Farrelly, Board of Education President Christopher Paolillo, High School Principal Stephen O’Leary, Valedictorian Julian Cruz, Salutatorian Dheera Misra and Class of 2026 Co-Presidents Nezar Hajar and Sophia DiCiero offering warm words of encouragement to the graduates as they step into their next chapter. Their message reflections set a tone of pride, gratitude and anticipation for what lies ahead.
In addressing the graduates, Mr. O’Leary reminded students that success is built through perseverance rather than certainty. “Growth begins the moment you're willing to put yourself out there, despite being nervous, unsure or uncomfortable,” he said. “Confidence is not something people are born with. It's earned through experience, wisdom and hard work.”
Encouraging students to carry the lessons they've learned beyond graduation, he urged them to value the wisdom of those around them and to continue demonstrating the character that has defined their journey. “Learn from the best people around you. Show up on time, treat people with respect, work hard when no one’s watching and remain dependable, even when things become tough.”
The ceremony also featured heartfelt reflections from the Class of 2026’s top two academic achievers.
Cruz encouraged his classmates to embrace who they are with confidence.
“Don't hide from yourself,” the valedictorian said. “Be proud. Hold your name high, and you’d be surprised by the results.”
While Misra reflected on the many changes that await the graduates and encouraged her classmates to view the future with optimism rather than uncertainty.
“As we look toward the future, we must remember the lessons that brought us to this moment,” the salutatorian exclaimed. “Life will continue to challenge us with unexpected changes, new opportunities and difficult decisions. Instead of fearing change, we should welcome it.”
Led by Mary Ann Cafiero, concert choir director, Bryan Heaton, band director, and Christopher Patruno, assistant band director, the senior high school band and choir added to the celebration with a moving performance of Carl Strommen's “Like an Eagle.”
As tassels turned from right to left and then soared high into the sky, the WB Class of 2026 was ready to embrace new beginnings and the next chapter of their lives.
