Fifth Graders Explore Budgeting with Interactive Math Project

Fifth grade students at John F. Kennedy Elementary School are putting their math skills to work through a fun and engaging real-world budgeting project centered around planning a birthday party.
As part of the activity, students were challenged to organize a party for 80 guests while staying within a set budget. Using critical thinking and problem-solving skills, students carefully planned every aspect of the event, including selecting a venue, purchasing invitations, budgeting for food and choosing decorations.
To determine the best venue option, fifth graders compared three different locations by calculating and analyzing the area of each space to see which would best fit their guests and budget. Throughout the project, they applied important math concepts such as area, volume, fractions and decimals in meaningful and practical ways.
The interactive lesson encouraged students to make thoughtful financial decisions while strengthening their understanding of mathematics through hands-on learning. By connecting classroom concepts to real-life scenarios, the project helped them see the value and relevance of math in everyday situations.
