Building a Culture of Inclusion through Creativity and Community

In honor of World Autism Awareness Day and Autism Acceptance Month in April, elementary special education students from across the West Babylon School District engaged in a meaningful, districtwide initiative that promotes understanding, inclusion and acceptance.
Elementary students decorated coffee cup sleeves, each featuring thoughtful messages and creative designs that celebrate neurodiversity and support individuals with autism. These sleeves were distributed at the Babylon Bean Coffee House on April 1, helping to spread awareness throughout the community.
On April 1, Tooker Avenue Elementary School held a schoolwide Neurodiversity Awareness Walk, sponsored by the Wellness Committee. Students wore blue and gold to show school spirit and come together as one community.
Tooker students and staff are also collaborating on a building-wide display titled “Growing Our Awareness.” Each student received a puzzle piece to decorate with a character trait or quality that represents what it means to be an inclusive classmate. Once completed, all puzzle pieces will come together to form a large tree display in the school lobby, symbolizing a collective commitment to inclusion and acceptance.
Lastly, Tooker will host a book drive focused on neurodiversity awareness and acceptance. Approximately 50 new titles will be added to the school library, providing valuable resources for both students and staff. To enhance accessibility and engagement, teachers will record themselves reading selected books, creating opportunities for students to connect with these important themes both in and out of the classroom.
Together, these initiatives highlight the district’s ongoing commitment to fostering a culture of empathy, respect and belonging. By empowering students to share messages of acceptance and celebrate differences, the school community continues to build a more inclusive environment for all learners.
