JFK Third Graders Dig Into Science

Joined by a special guest, third grade students at John F. Kennedy Elementary School took part in a hands-on science experiment by dissecting owl pellets as part of their current science unit on Feb. 11.
Throughout the unit, students have been learning about owls and their prey. During the lesson, students worked collaboratively to carefully examine the owl pellets and identify the different objects found inside, using the bones to determine what the owls had eaten.
Students also worked together to construct an owl skeleton, helping them better understand the anatomy of owls and how predators digest their food. The activity encouraged teamwork, observation and critical thinking while allowing students to apply their scientific knowledge in a real-world, interactive way.
The hands-on experience gave students a deeper understanding of food chains, animal adaptations and the scientific investigation process.
