South Bay Second Graders Study the White House

Second grade students in Ann Fitzpatrick’s class at South Bay Elementary School recently explored the history and importance of the White House as part of their government at work unit in their social studies curriculum. After reading informational texts about the president’s home, they focused on identifying the author’s message and key details presented in the reading.
To demonstrate their understanding, students selected eight facts they learned about the White House, highlighting its role, history and unique features. The activity strengthened their reading comprehension skills while helping to build knowledge about an important national landmark and its significance in American government.
Through this engaging lesson, students combined literacy and social studies skills to deepen their understanding of the White House and its place in U.S. history.
