Santapogue Third Graders Celebrate Thanksgiving traditions

Third graders at Santapogue Elementary School explored Thanksgiving traditions and the history of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade through a hands-on balloon project inspired by the book “Balloons Over Broadway.” The story tells the true tale of Tony Sarg, the inventive puppeteer and engineer who created the first parade balloons, transforming the Thanksgiving parade into the magical spectacle it is today.
After reading about Sarg’s creativity and problem solving, students designed and built their own parade balloons, applying what they learned about engineering, artistry and storytelling. The lesson culminated in the second annual Thanksgiving Day Parade on Nov. 25, where students proudly showcased their balloon creations along a parade route through the school.
