Kindergartners at John F. Kennedy Elementary School have been building strong literacy foundations through both reading and writing activities.
During their reading time, students practiced developing their reading stamina, independently reading for 10 minutes while remaining focused and engaged. Using their individual reading mats, the young readers organized their book selections by keeping track of the stories they had already read and those they planned to read next.
In Writer’s Workshop, students connected literacy with science as they explored what plants need to survive. After learning about sunlight, water, air and soil, each student wrote one fact about plant needs and illustrated their writing with a matching picture. Students proudly shared their work with classmates, strengthening both their communication and presentation skills.
