National Junior Honor Society Information and Criteria

 

WHAT IS NATIONAL JUNIOR HONOR SOCIETY?

The National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) is an organization that highlights those students who have shown a commitment to the values of scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship.

These five main purposes have guided chapters of NJHS:

  • to create enthusiasm for scholarship
  • to stimulate a desire to help others/provide service to others
  • to promote leadership
  • to encourage responsible citizenship
  • to develop character in the students of secondary schools

Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.

 

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO APPLY?

  • 7th and 8th graders are eligible for
  • A minimum cumulative weighted average of a 90% (no rounding) at the end of the last five consecutive quarters must be achieved in order to qualify.
    • An 5% does NOT meet the minimum cumulative weighted average.
    • In order to calculate the cumulative weighted average, we take the final average (all of their courses averaged together) for the student’s last 5 quarters and average those numbers together.
  • Eligibility is based on Quarters 2,3,4 of the previous school year AND Quarters 1, 2 of the

current school year.

 

THE APPLICATION PROCESS

  • Scholarship - A 90% (no rounding) cumulative GPA for 5 consecutive quarters is
  • Character/Citizenship - The candidate must demonstrate participation in AT LEAST TWO school activities (clubs, sports etc.) and/or outside activities.
    • Discipline is strongly Any student who has received an in school and/or out of school suspension during the CURRENT school year will not be considered for induction into NJHS.
  • Leadership - The candidate will indicate (to the best of their ability) any areas where they have demonstrated leadership (ex. captain of a team, officer of an organization, etc.).
  • Community Service - Candidates must show FIVE HOURS of community service from the current school year.
