Fourth-grader Alma Gaxiola, a student at Tooker Avenue, recently became a published poet.

Gaxiola’s poem, “I’m Growing Up,” was published in “A Celebration of Poets, East, Fall 2015.” Gaxiola was inspired to write the poem after she came across a poem by a former Tooker Avenue student in the school library. With the help of her school librarian, Gaxiola learned about poem types and structures. Her teachers reviewed and provided feedback on her poem.
 
After submitting her work online for the Fall 2015 contest in December, Gaxiola finally received news that her poem was chosen to appear in print.
