During No Name-Calling Week (Jan. 18-22), students in Mrs. LoSardo’s third-grade class at South Bay School read the book “Don’t Laugh at Me” by Steve Seskin, and discussed how “put-downs” make other people feel. This was followed up with a focus on “put-ups” and how saying even one kind thing can change the way someone views himself/herself. To share this concept, the class decided to build a Wall of Words to help others who might be feeling down. During the week, the students wrote encouraging “put-ups” on bricks to build the wall. The finished product is displayed in the school lobby, so that everyone in the school can benefit from the confidence-building words.
