New Principal Appointed at SHS

Stephen O’Leary, who has served as the assistant principal of the Senior High School for the past eight years, will step into the role of principal beginning in the 2020-2021 school year. He will work alongside Senior High School Interim Principal Dr. Ellice Vassallo during a transition period in July and August. Dr. Vassallo announced her retirement after serving as principal of the school for the past 26 years.

“I intend to work with all stakeholders in West Babylon to provide the very best educational experience for every child who passes through the doors of the high school,” Mr. O’Leary said.

Mr. O’Leary has been a part of the West Babylon school community since 2005. Beginning as a mathematics teacher in the high school, he transitioned to the role of mathematics chairperson and mathematics and science chairperson. In 2012, he stepped into the role of assistant principal and also currently serves as the West Babylon Administrator’s Association president.

Mr. O’Leary holds a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics and a master’s degree in mathematics from Stony Brook University. He received an advanced graduate certification in educational administration from Stony Brook University. He holds certifications in school building leader and school district leader. “I have been privileged over the course of the past 15 years to work in West Babylon. I am emotionally invested in this community, specifically in the continued success of the high school,” he said.
