JFK Kindergartners Build Literacy Skills

Kindergartners at John F. Kennedy Elementary School have been building strong literacy foundations through both reading and writing activities.

During their reading time, students practiced developing their reading stamina, independently reading for 10 minutes while remaining focused and engaged. Using their individual reading mats, the young readers organized their book selections by keeping track of the stories they had already read and those they planned to read next.

In Writer’s Workshop, students connected literacy with science as they explored what plants need to survive. After learning about sunlight, water, air and soil, each student wrote one fact about plant needs and illustrated their writing with a matching picture. Students proudly shared their work with classmates, strengthening both their communication and presentation skills.

Kindergarten students at Tooker Avenue Elementary School learned life-saving lessons during Fire Safety Month thanks to a special in-school visit from members of the West Babylon Fire Department on Oct. 7. The program provided students with age-appropriate fire safety education while helping them build trust with local first responders.
During the visit, firefighters spoke to students about important safety topics such as what to do if they hear a smoke alarm, how to safely exit a home during an emergency, and the importance of knowing their address and dialing 911. The firefighters also demonstrated how they put on their protective gear piece by piece, helping students understand that even though the equipment may look a little scary, firefighters are community helpers who are there to keep them safe.
Students were especially excited to take a close-up tour of a real fire truck. They explored the truck’s compartments, observed equipment like hoses and ladders, and even heard the sirens. The hands-on experience made the learning both memorable and meaningful. Following the visit, students returned to their classrooms to reflect on the experience. They drew detailed pictures of what they learned and wrote short sentences describing fire safety tips.

Students, staff, and families at John F. Kennedy Elementary School joined together on Oct. 1 to celebrate Walk to School Day, an event that promotes healthy habits, community spirit and pedestrian safety.

The morning began with students meeting at a designated point, where they were greeted by Principal Denisha Van Liew, teachers and parents. Together, they walked as a group to school, building excitement and camaraderie before the start of the day.

This annual nationwide initiative highlights not only physical activity but also the importance of safe walking routes and environmentally friendly practices. By leaving cars at home, families are encouraged to reduce traffic congestion around schools and lessen their carbon footprint.

The event concluded at the school entrance, where students gathered for a group photo before the start of the school day. The West Babylon School District looks forward to continuing this tradition, emphasizing health, safety, and community engagement each year.
