A Special Lesson with Live Chicks

The peeping sounds of puffy yellow chicks reverberated throughout the kindergarten, first- and second-grade classrooms at South Bay Elementary School in the West Babylon School District. Borrowed for the day from Long Island Poultry in Riverhead, the special guests served as a live lesson on animal species, life cycles and spring.

In each of the participating classrooms, the students learned about the life cycle of chickens, wrote about the chicks’ characteristics, and read books about the animals. The favorite activity for all of the students, however, was taking turns petting their new animal friends.
